Hello, I'm Dr. David Murphy
I am often asked, 'What is Wellness?' Well most importantly, wellness is not an absence of illness. Wellness is a state of mind and body that exists without any reference to illness. If we truly feel well, then wellness can, and needs, to co-exist with any illness that arises during our lifetimes. And, all of us have been and will get ill during our lifetimes. That is just part of being human. All of us will experience some very difficult times in our lives. And yet, it is still possible to feel well during those times. In fact, it is vitally important to feel well during those times. It is wellness that will help us to move through those difficult times and get us back on track. Wellness will help us to cope with any illness that arises. Wellness will optimize our ability to repair any injury and to fight off any infection and ensure that our immune system neither under-reacts or over-reacts. It has been estimated that almost half of all adults are living with a chronic condition, including diabetes, arthritis, depression, high blood pressure, chronic pain, irritable bowel, migraine headaches, anxiety, cancer, addictions or problems with mobility. So, if wellness were an absence of illness, only about half of us could expect to feel well. And that is just not true. Wellness is a mental, physical, emotional and spiritual state of mind and body. Wellness is not only the ability to feel in charge of your life but also to accept responsibility for managing your own life and to have a realistic awareness of what you can change and what you cannot change and, of course, the wisdom to know the difference. Wellness is being able to make the most of your physical abilities, to accept any physical limitations that may exist at any given moment and, at the same time, to repeatedly test those limitations to find out if they are still real. Wellness is the ability to feel emotionally positive and content with how your life is today, just today, while having dreams for an even better future. Wellness is the ability to feel that your life and what you are doing at any given moment has a sense of meaning and purpose. So, wellness is not a mystery. There is a recipe for wellness and each of us needs to create our own recipe. I'm Dr. David Murphy.
